Last night I watched the beginning of the 12/31/65 episode of The Tonight Show. It features a 15 minute opening with Skitch Henderson and Ed McMahon doing a routine before Johnny came on the stage. For the first few years, they had to stall for 15 minutes before the show actually started, because local news would air in that slot in most markets. I'll watch the rest of the show soon, but I loved the atmosphere, especially it being New Year's Eve, and I love hearing the band play. It was so soothing.

What did Ed McMahon do during that time? Something like a monologue?

Jokes, silly antics with Skitch. This time they are very terrible limericks, and he has Skitch putting on outfits. This bit is on YouTube. I'll watch it to make sure it's the clip I think it is, and then I'll post.

One of the funniest Carnac* sketches I've seen. :D (or is Karnak? Carnak? Karnac? Anyway.) Note, for reference: air traffic controllers and Major League Baseball players were either striking or threatening to strike at this time.

This had to be one of the biggest laughs on the tonight show. Watch through to the end.
