Welcome to the 1921/2021 Silent Photoplay Forum Watchfest! We've been long overdue for another event like this. It'll function much the same way our previous 1920/2020 watchfest did: we'll be watching the top 10 highest grossing films of 1921, and where a film is lost or otherwise unavailable we'll substitute it with another film from 1921.

Here is the list from Wikipedia that I'm working with. The last two will have to be substituted since they're either lost or not online:

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse
The Kid
The Three Musketeers
The Sheik
The Affairs of Anatol
Orphans of the Storm
Little Lord Fauntleroy
School Days (not available online)
Why Girls Leave Home (lost)

Our final line-up is below. If there is an issue with a link, please let me know. Films currently being watched will have red titles and a larger bolded font. We can discuss the films at any time in this thread, just be sure to use spoiler tags! They're the icon with the yellow exclamation and triangle in the posting toolbar.

A final note that I'm copy/pasting from our previous watchfest: if there is a film here you really liked, I highly suggest downloading the mp4 in case any of these videos are pulled from YouTube. We've had some films get yanked after past watchfests, and during our vamp one we actually had a film get taken down during the event.

Here's our very first film of the watchfest, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, starring Pomeroy Cannon, Joseph Swickard, Rudolph Valentino, Alice Terry, Wallace Beery. This film was Valentino's breakout role. We'll have until June 7 to watch.

Great!! Thanks, BettyLou—looking forward to it. :D There are some classic films here I've never got round to watching, the first one being among them.

I can't wait to watch later this week! I think I have before, but if I have it was so long ago that I remember very little.

I'm about halfway through Horsemen, and plan to finish it later today. If you've not watched it yet, that striking music at the very beginning is from Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 6—I'll have some comments about that. :)

The music is great on this copy. I knew you'd have comments on it. 🙂

The is my first time seeing this iconic film. I had always been confused by the title, and somehow pictured it in my mind as a “sheik” story, with Rudy being one of four horseman riding around in the desert. I'd not realized the title referred to symbolic imagery from Revelation. Oh well…
