Silent Christmas Shorts

Post by donnie »

There are a lot of interesting Christmas-related shorts, many of them very early. I thought it would be good to start with the very first appearance of Santa Claus on film from 1898 (or technically Father Christmas, since it's a British film). This has both the original followed by a colorized version. See which you prefer.

Thanks for posting here in time! I love these films.
You trying to tell me you didn't hear that shriek? That was something trying to get out of its premature grave, and I don't want to be here when it does. - Phantom of the Paradise (1974)

Here is a fascinating early Griffith Biograph. The opening scenes are definitely on the dark side, but things turn cheerier later on.

Here's another holiday favorite of mine, the Edison film A Winter Straw Ride (1906). This one always fills me with delight. :D The score here is not my favorite, but ok.
