Cylinders

There's an awesome site where you can access a HUGE trove of cylinder recordings. Here's a cool song from 1916 sung by Billy Murray called Since Mother Goes To Movie Shows. My! They would flip their lids if they knew what goes on today!

Hmm... some pretty serious addiction issues there.
That does look like a great archive.

Have you noticed that with the early commercial music recordings, it always sounds like the same man (or woman) singing? I guess that was just the limitation of the frequency range that made the voices sound similar—or maybe it's just me?

I don't know, I never noticed anything like that. I will say that it sometimes is hard to tell if it is a man or woman singing, but I think that's the style of singing back then. Maybe that reasoning (the style) is why it sounds like it's always the same guy to you.

I've been poking around this interesting site some more. Many of the recordings are surprisingly high quality, considering their age. They've done a good job with restoration.

Isn't that a fantastic recording? I love that part where he talks about hearing the voices of your loved ones even though they are far away.... It reminded me how amazing it is that we can hear him, over 100 years later.

The personal (as opposed to commercial) recordings section looks interesting. It's apparent these were used a lot for momentos, long distance exchanges with family, recording a child's performance, etc.

Yes, I listened to that odd one earlier. I wonder what the motivation was for making that.

Some of what they're saying is indistinguishable. I also noticed a strange kind of echo after many of the words, almost like an added reverb. I wonder if that was accidental?
