Newspaper Articles

Someone on Twitter brought attention to this from another source. This one that I found in The New York Times has more details.

You trying to tell me you didn't hear that shriek? That was something trying to get out of its premature grave, and I don't want to be here when it does. - Phantom of the Paradise (1974)

I don't know! It is pretty strange. How can one stay happy and "in perfect health" without moving a muscle? I'm thinking this guy had a secret night life.

Yeah, something's not on the level there. But if I were the Jersey County Farm, I wouldn't take this lying down. ;-)

I found a website called oldmagazinearticles.com!
This one is satirical from Vanity Fair, 1914. It is by James Montgomery Flagg, best known for creating the "I want YOU!" Uncle Sam poster.
This article is making fun of the ridiculous advertisements that were printed in that time. Now, I will warn that the first example can be considered racist.
My favorite is the coffee one.

I like the way he lampoons the exaggeration in those Victorian product ads. Once they got started extolling the virtues of some nostrum or other, they kept going...and going...and going. Why not just say it cures everything?

I like the coffee one best, too. And that's still somewhat applicable today, because they are still trying to saddle coffee consumption with all kinds of dire results—but never have succeeded. :)

 They didn't have to explain that it was an awful experience—I would kinda figure that... ;)

 True! Those headlines are usually pretty redundant, though.
