Unbelievable Ads
Re: Unbelievable Ads
I wonder what the story is on these. How could they send a one-pair-fits-all that would work for any individual's prescription? And yet, you only had to pay if satisfied. I wonder if they were just ordinary drug store reading glasses. Yet they say they are good for distance vision, too.

Re: Unbelievable Ads
$4.98 was about $75 in 1923. I think that part on the top left is funny. "Improve the vision and grace the face."
I doubt they were useful for more than reading glasses, if that.

Re: Unbelievable Ads
This looks like an actual pair of them, or the same style, anyway.

They do look like them! Those would definitely ensure that they wouldn't fall off. Interesting design.

Here's a screenshot I made of Gloria Swanson in Why Change Your Wife? (1920). I thought I remembered her wearing this odd style in that film (one of my favorite silent features!)

Re: Unbelievable Ads
Here's a rather bizarre one from Popular Science. Gee, it would be a hard choice between displaying it on the mantel and giving it as a gift. I guess you could make two.

Do you notice how it has the word gift in quotations?

Re: Unbelievable Ads
No, I didn't notice that. That reminds me of some funny pictures Steppie put on the old board in the line of words that shouldn't be put in quotation marks. Maybe she will see this and repost them here.
