Here's the full photo I just found.
"Hugo Gernsback (1884 – 1967), founder and publisher of popular science and science fiction magazines such as Radio News, Modern Electrics, Amazing Stories, and Wonder Stories, demonstrating the use of his 'television goggles' in his New York office, 1963. A bust of fellow inventor Nikola Tesla stands on a column behind him."(Photo by Alfred Eisenstaedt/The LIFE Picture Collection via Getty Images)

You trying to tell me you didn't hear that shriek? That was something trying to get out of its premature grave, and I don't want to be here when it does. - Phantom of the Paradise (1974)

Did a bit of further looking on this. It was apparently a non-functional mock-up to show what the invention would look like. Below is an article on Gernsback with more info. He sounds a little on the nutty side (and maybe somewhat on the creepy side, too. :? ) http://www.erbzine.com/mag14/1464.html

Thanks a lot for that article!! I'm having lots of fun reading it. It's sort of inspiring! Did you read the whole thing? I'm still in the process. I'm going to read his serial Ralph 124C41+ when I am through with the article and have time.
I like the writer of this article. It's kind of in a fun tone. I think they're making a special effort, especially in the beginning, to make him sound like a nutty inventor. Why do you think he seems a little creepy? The only thing creepy I see so far is maybe the use of the word 'niggling' which I'd never heard before. 😝
Maybe you mean his 'deep concern for sex and funerals' where he feels the need to shoot dead bodies into space. Weird! And sounds made up. I'd need more evidence for that.
Did you get the reference about instant newspapers in the home? I believe they were actually very expensive fax machines and only could print three pages at once.
I've never heard of Gernsback, but he seems to be very well known in the sci fi community!
I'll add more comments when I'm done with the article!

No, I just scanned pretty hastily through it.

That would be it.

I guess I should go back and look at this again. Glad you enjoyed it. :)

Back to Gernsback... :)

Here's one of his ideas. What I don't understand is what the advantage is of having the music under the tree. Wouldn't be easier just to listen to music on the radio beside the tree?
