1939 family movies of sledding—with score by Ben Model. :-)

I saw this by accident on youtube again today, and I decided to do a little research. I'm pretty sure this film was taken in 1939 in Minnesota. The license plate looks just like it would. See my comment on the video.

P.S. Do you ever go back and read a comment you made --- anywhere, youtube, a forum, etc. and think "Did I really write that?" the comment seems so alien sometimes, strange wording, or I surprise myself with my articulation (I know that may sound really conceited, but it is the only way I can convey the feeling!) It's almost embarrassing. Well that happened to me a few minutes ago, and that is why I bring it up.
Yes! I’ve had that experience several times. I’ll think I’ve found something new, and then I’ll see that I watched it 5 years ago, made a comment on it, and have totally forgotten it. Weird. :) (And yes, sometimes I’m surprised at the wording.)

A time or two I’ve even started to reply in agreement to a comment and then looked at the name—um...that’s me. I’ve had the same thing happen on discussion boards.

So I’m glad to know I’m not the only person to run into myself online!

 That is really funny!
You trying to tell me you didn't hear that shriek? That was something trying to get out of its premature grave, and I don't want to be here when it does. - Phantom of the Paradise (1974)

Bravo! Great score by Donald Sosin, as well. My favorite part of this is when the monster cooks up in the pot with that arm waving. :)

Isn't it so cool? That was one of the very first shorts I ever saw wayyy back when I first was getting into silents. Good, solid photoplay. 😊

A sort of bizarre subject for a photoplay, but whatever floats your boat. A simple story of two nephews, most definitely of the adult persuasion, who come visit their aunt who is cranky that they're out in the snow in their underclothes. Sorry, no score for this one. :( The reason I watched Her Nephews From Labrador (1913) is that it was mentioned in the Answers Section of Motion Picture Story Magazine, June 1913.

I rewatched this today. One of the classic Biographs featuring Blanche Sweet. Good sharp print with good tinting and a quality score, too.

Here's a really nice Edison from 1914, very heartwarming little story. No score, unfortunately.

Here is a film called Making Christmas Crackers (1910)

It's mostly an industrial short with a short family scene at the end. I was very confused by this at first; I was expecting crackers as a snack, and then I thought they were firecrackers.... but now I think these were noisemakers with candy inside. Here's an explanation of this Victorian Christmas tradition.

Here are two silent shorts by D.W. Griffith (Biograph) - His Trust and His Trust Fulfilled (1911). His Trust Fulfilled is a sequel to His Trust, meant to be shown together. This copy is cut together so that the second film's opening title is nonexistent. The 'sequel' takes place 4 years after, and the war has ended.

This takes place during the civil war. I want to say a few things before this is viewed. One, make sure your speakers are relatively low. There is music, but they also added sound effects which are pretty horrible. Two, there are a couple small parts cut out. At the end of the first short, it is cut short. It's not totally apparent that the man is curling up to sleep outside his own cabin. I think this is an important scene. The other part that has been cut out is at the end of the second film, there is supposed to be a short wedding sequence, and after the man returns back to his cabin, he is supposed to be shown taking the saber off the wall and clutching it in happiness, as his trust has been fulfilled.
The way the man is treated in the film is really terrible, and all the other the black people, who are actually all white people in blackface, are waved away and largely ignored as if they are pets or pieces of furniture. It's unlikely that the girl is even appreciative of what he does. It's classic racism at its finest.
This film was included in the April 1911 edition of Motion Picture Story Magazine. The first page is missing, but it doesn't detract from the story, as it's basically a history lesson for the first few paragraphs.
