Yeah, Fritzi Ritz was definitely not the same style. This page has some examples of the strip in its early days.

That's an interesting bit of dialect. I once read a story by a British author (Alan Sillitoe, I believe) where a character says "I'm goin' to 'ang messen, mate."—meaning "I'm going to hang myself"—which sounds similar, so that must be the Cockney version of "macel".
