Film Company Ads
Re: Film Company Ads
Those are very nice ads! I agree that the ads of today just seem lacking. They want to scream at you about everything. Don't get me wrong, they've been doing that since the sound era began, but the old posters have much more artistry.
You trying to tell me you didn't hear that shriek? That was something trying to get out of its premature grave, and I don't want to be here when it does. - Phantom of the Paradise (1974)
Re: Film Company Ads
How cool would it be to have a subscription to this? Back in the days when information was only obtained by writing in and asking questions, hoping that they wouldn't be ignored, I bet this was invaluable source of information. This was advertised in the December 1912 issue of Motion Picture Story Magazine.

Re: Film Company Ads
Sounds wonderful, doesn't it? I'll bet there were a lot of excited subscribers waiting for those issues.
You know, what you said above reminds me of something I think about sometimes, that maybe today we have access to too much information. Back in the days before the internet, I used to listen to shortwave radio sometimes at night. That was really exciting, to be able to hear Radio Moscow or Radio Havana, or the BBC, or all sorts of odd music and languages from all over the world. A lot of it was weak and static-y, but that made it all the more interesting. It felt really cool to be able to be right in my own home and be able connect to far away places like that and to see what you could pull in.
And now, we have the world at our fingertips—not that I'm not thankful for that, but somehow it's just not as special. I guess the less you have, the more you appreciate it...

Is that 22-28 inch photos in costume? Can't quite make it out.
Re: Film Company Ads
Photo layouts in character makeup. 20¢ each. I would gladly give them my 20 cents!

Here's a kind of weird one.

I don't know whose idea it was to make so many puns and such with the Kalem name but it is definitely done with affection. Here's one example in this magazine ad from Motion Picture Story, January 1913. The Kalendar. (Edit: Just realized I posted this picture here already. I'm leaving it here, anyway!)
