It's Bugs Bunny's 80th birthday!
Here is the earliest version of Bugs in Porky's Hare Hunt. He's actually very mean at the end. What do you think? He also reminds me significantly of Woody Woodpecker.

And go here to his first official cartoon in 1940, A Wild Hare. It's pretty hilarious.

You trying to tell me you didn't hear that shriek? That was something trying to get out of its premature grave, and I don't want to be here when it does. - Phantom of the Paradise (1974)
Re: Happy Birthday Bugs Bunny
That was interesting to see the early version. His laugh is definitely similar to Woody Woodpecker's. The character was much more developed by the 1940 one. Happy Birthday, Bugs!
PS
Seeing Bugs chomping those carrots caused me to go on a carrot-eating binge. He sure makes them look delicious.

Re: Bugs Bunny
Here's one called Harum Scarum (1939), from before he was officially Bugs. It even has a good old --- and very silly --- 1930s - cartoon - song that he sings toward the end.

Re: Bugs Bunny
So that was the original Elmer! (I guess it's Elmer since it's his voice. ) Poor guy. Bugs is meaner here than in later one—at least in the later ones he's been provoked in some way and is getting revenge.
Elmer was enjoying that "brief" nap so much, it made me drowsy and I had to take a nap.

Re: Bugs Bunny
This one's interesting. Bugs Bunny in "What's Cookin' Doc?" (1944) where Bugs thinks he deserves the Oscar. Some live action in this one, and a clip from a previous 1941 Bugs cartoon.

Bugs was pretty mean a lot of times! But especially in the early ones.
