That's a well-made and interesting one. I loved the music, and I wish I had one of those mechanical cows. :)

We have some animated cameos in this one! 1935's Hollywood Capers

https://youtu.be/FcDsTZdYtsw?feature=shared

I always have a hard time understanding the lyrics to the songs in 30s cartoons. Luckily there's closed captions!

Song lyrics:

No rattlers could rip her
No pythons could nip her
For she was the last word in class
Sweet Flossie Farmer, the lovely snake charmer
Who fell for a snake in the grass

She shunned all the geezers
On flying trapezers
And lead all the acrobats fair
But sweet flossy farmer, the lovely sneak charmer
Went boom for a snake in the grass
You trying to tell me you didn't hear that shriek? That was something trying to get out of its premature grave, and I don't want to be here when it does. - Phantom of the Paradise (1974)

No wonder you had a hard time with that one. With the unusual character of the lyrics and tempo it was going, I wonder if the audiences of the time actually understood any of it, either.

Eatin' On the Cuff (1942)

I love these offbeat ones!! Lyrics below. :D

https://youtu.be/kcAZioikfZs?si=iyuhy-9bru_nSc_X

I'll tell you the story of the moth and his flame
But promise that you'll try to keep it quiet
The lady was a honey bee
With marriage as her aim
And he lived on a fabricated diet

Now the moth told the bee
Come on honey marry me
So tomorrow wedding bells will surely ring
Ding dong ding dong ding dong ding
And today's the day that wedding bells will ring

In a suit of fancy clothes
We find our boyfriend in a doze
'Twas a zoot suit with a neat pleat nicely stitched
Get up you lazy creature
Eat your breakfast find a preacher
'Cause at three o'clock today you're getting hitched

Here comes the groom straight as a broom all purtied up with 10 cent perfume

There sat the bride but she cried and cried and cried

Oh where oh where has her little moth gone oh where oh where can he be

So our little pal the moth
Who was fed up with the cloth
Decided he was late and how he ran
Ah but a big black widow spider
Dropped beside him with a bang and with hungry eyes she cackled
LOOK! A MAN!

But the moth could not be had
And it made the widow mad
Just to think there was a man
She couldn't tame

I don't want to set the world on fire
But it says a moth's attracted by a flame

So they built a little nest and they settled in the vest and lived happy ever after on the cuff

That's a unique one, isn't it? :D Very clever. I especially liked the dueling stingers.

I thought it was adorable. Notice she says "my hero!" Even though he's a worthless butthead 😂 he should be saying that to HER!

Toon In With Me

Post by Kitty »

Here come the holiday cartoons. I saw these on Toon in With Me today (except the last one, that was my addition). The connection with all but the last one is that they were all nominated for the academy award for best animated short.

This first one is the best Tom and Jerry I've ever seen. I love Tom and Jerry anyway, but this one was nominated for a 1941 academy award. The good copy is on Dailymotion, so here it is.

The Night Before Christmas (1941)
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7trj3b

This next one is the first Color Rhapsody from Columbia. See comments and lyrics after the video.

Holiday Land (1934)
https://youtu.be/5tSFlCUG8os?si=UFXtfiKnnXytagWE

Comments about this one: If you watch the calendar, it's May Day! Wouldn't he be excited about the festivities in school or the community today?! Lawd knows I would! Also, just past 6! How old is this boy? Why does he have to get up so early?
Notice Thanksgiving is on the 29th. Originally thanksgiving was designated as the last Thursday of November instead of the 4th, but they changed it later. I don't know why Halloween is on the 30th of October, as it seems that it has always been on the 31st. I also don't know why Easter is on April 7th, as it wasn't on that date in 1934.

I love the old man for the new year.

Lyrics from the old man:
All the whole year through,
Scrappy you were blue,
Wishing for a holiday
Your wishes will come true.

Take me by the hand,
We'll see that happy land
Prepare to laugh and sing and play
For here comes Christmas Day.

Come along, come along,
Let's be on our way,
Hi de ho, here we go,
To Happy New Year's Day.

Upon our trip,
We'll quickly skip
To the Easter holiday.

Come on ye all,
Each Tom, Dick and Harry,
Come on and be merry and happy
Fill your glass with laughter and folly
And chase melancholy away.

Laugh, Laugh, ha ha ha ha
Sing sing, tra la la la
Come ye all
And make life worth living
Our thanks will be given today. 2x

Lad and lass
Come raise your glass
And join me in a toast
To the one who lives for fun,
The one whom we love most.
So tilt each rim
And drink to him
The boy who's always happy
Lift each cup and bottoms up
And drink drink toooooo

If each day were a holiday
Cares would all fly away.

Next is an MGM cartoon with a strong anti-war message. You'll have to jump to DailyMotion again for this. It's nothing like the previous two cartoons, be aware, but it's still a visually gorgeous film, and a message worth hearing.

Peace on Earth (1939)

I can't leave you on that note, so I'll leave you with this classic!

Grampy in Christmas Comes But Once A Year (1936)

I enjoyed watching those. :) The Tom and Jerry one is unusual, and Color Rhapsody one was so beautifully animated—colorful indeed. Yes, a good message in Peace on Earth, and a timely one, alas unheeded. In late 1939, the world was about to explode into World War II.
