The Cinnamon Bear Audible Original

Post by Kitty »

Just in time for the holidays, I have listened to the first episode of the Audible Original re-imagining of The Cinnamon Bear. While the show is not anywhere near as charming as the first, I found Alan Cumming's voice as Cinnamon Bear pretty endearing. I'm not loving Judy's sarcasm, though. Maybe it will grow on me, because, if you know me at all, I'm going to be listening to the whole thing!

There are only 20 episodes compared to the original 26. They have used some of the original music, and it seems that the words to his theme haven't changed a bit! Listen with me if you dare --- just be open to the fact that it's way different. The acting isn't great from Judy and Jimmy so far, and they're adults playing kids. But I'm not put off totally --- I love the Cinnamon Bear too much for that!

I wonder why they felt they needed to redo it... No, a sarcastic Judy doesn't seem right.

Probably to update it. To us, it's charming and perfect, but we are used to old time radio shows. People who aren't interested in old things need an updated version that they feel they can relate to. I'm sure this will have its merits, too. So far I feel like they've tried to keep some parts in, even some of the same lines and original interlude music has been kept.

In this second episode, they changed Weary Willie to Weary Winnie, voiced by Rachel Dratch. She's more of a whiner than a know-it-all in this version.

They're portraying Judy as a realist, kind of a bah humbug so far, but I'm going to make a prediction that by the end she'll be just as fun-loving as Jimmy is. We'll find out soon enough if my prediction is correct!

One thing I'm actually really liking is that this is obviously a love-letter to the original. Rather than a straight re-do, this is most definitely paying homage to the original with love. Sprinkled here and there are variations of some of the same lines as the original. He even mentioned his trans-oceanic root-beer flight in that first episode.

Oh, and one thing I didn't notice in the first episode: instead of 'soda pop', the aeroplane is fueled by bubble tea gas.

In the third episode, we meet Crazy Quilt who is voiced by Stephen Root.

Ha! Jimmy called Cinnamon Bear CB! That's what we do sometimes. :D

This episode begins with the crew ambushing Crazy Quilt. Another observation: It's really fantastic that they don't change one lyric to any of the songs (so far!).

So cute! They try to end the show, and the narrator is interrupted by "how-wow-wow!"

Instead of the Inkaboos, they call them the Stinkapoos --- a 'tribe of very smelly marionettes'. Lord Stenchman is the name of the leader of the army. Wonder what's next?

Well that's kind of interesting! It's fun to find a new twist on my favorite radio show tradition!

Correction --- It's King Howdy-Doo III instead of King Blotto III, played by Ed Herbstman. I was not familiar with that name. Dan Finnerty plays Lord Stenchman.

Lots of this episode takes lines directly from the Blotter episode. Instead of being offended by being called blotters, they are offended in being called puppets. They're marionette's for goodness sake!

This time the inscription is on the King Howdy-Doo's neck --- in French, and Judy knows French! The inscription says "Thread the strings from the back to the front to properly assemble this puppet." The fact that the word puppet is on his body makes King Howdy-Doo very angry, so he orders them to be thrown into the immensitory stinkwell. "Immensitory Strinkwell? What's that?" Cinnamon Bear asks. Everyone answers "Nooooobody knowwwws."

Stephen Root does Crazy Quilt. Milo Maneheim is Jimmy and Sarah Vowell is Judy. I don't recognize Jimmy and Judy.

And instead of scissor soldiers, Crazy Quilt comes with a pair of huge scissors threatening to cut their marionette strings if they don't unhand the group. He cuts their strings, and therefore singlehandedly saved the crew!

Wesley the Wailing Whale is played by Bridgette Everett. I like that some of these people are lesser known names instead of it being a huge production.

John Goodman plays Presto the Magician and Carolyn Keener plays Penelope Pelican.

I know I keep saying this, but I'm impressed with how much of word for word they've left in. If you're unsure about this one, just give it a try and look past the different acting and slight changes. It's fun to compare the two!

Melanie Hoops as the Pirate Captain, and Captain Taffy is Craig Bierko. Pirates! That's bad....

Episode 7 was a pretty straightforward Pirate episode.

Camryn Manheim is the Roly Poly Policeman.

They're now being dropped off at the magic wave!

Another straightforward Roly Poly episode!
