Maybe it's just me, but it kind of looks like these people are out of place. It reminds me of the colorforms we had as kids. Almost like cut outs that were positioned there. Of course, I very well could be wrong, but that's what they make me think of.
You're right! It does look that way, especially in the foreground, doesn't it? I'll see if I can find an original B&W.

Ok, here is the original. It was made by Jacob Riis. I think it was the colorization that made it look a little fakey. And I also found a site that shows a view of the same street as it looks today:

Cool! Very interesting to compare the two photos. Thanks for finding that!

I was looking to see if any of the buildings seem to still be extant. I think at least one on the right is, though I can't tell for sure.

Here's another interesting one by Riis: pupils in the Essex Market School in a poor quarter of New York, 1887.

This is a series of 15 photos that showed up on ebay at some point. I read that on the back of one it said "The Goblins will get you if you don't watch out." Somewhere else someone said that they were a stereoview card set. Maybe you're right about Little Orphant Annie!!

What a series of photos! Yes, they're definitely related to Little Orphant Annie. I recognize those particular "gobble-uns" from the film. I wonder why the little girl in the photos isn't Colleen Moore, that being the case. Maybe the photographer just rented the gobble-uns for his own use for awhile. :) Thanks for posting them!

I thought this was a pretty cool photo. It was made in New York around 1920. Guess who? None other than Bat Masterson, toward the end of his life. Somehow it seems odd that a colorful character of the old West like that would turn up in New York City attired like any other man on the street.

That photo is really beautiful! I love the colors. Thank you for sharing!
Somehow I missed the Bat Masterson photo from before. I actually am a little embarrassed to admit (but not enough to NOT admit!) that I have only heard that name briefly but don't know who that is.
