Vintage Photos at Random
Re: Vintage Photos at Random
Check out these cool photos of the Statue of Liberty during the construction phase. The top is the head on exhibit at the Paris World's Fair in 1878. The bottom is the unpacking of the face after its delivery to the U.S. on June 17, 1885.

Re: Vintage Photos at Random
I bet it was really something to see when it was first constructed. It would be nice to see a color photo of the time, but I doubt they exist.

What a striking photo! The luminosity and sharpness is amazing.
I must admit it gives me the creeps, somewhat, though I can't pin down exactly why.

Maybe because of the quality. These ladies look really alive.

Yes, I think that's part of it. Also, the fact that they look anxious to chew me up and spit me out (especially the middle one ).
Re: Vintage Photos at Random
The middle one is the most striking! That was one confident lady.

Re: Vintage Photos at Random
I'll say. I don't know what process was used for this photo (never could keep all those processes straight—daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes...), but whatever it was, there must have been a high silver content in the finished product for it to have that sheen and metallic glow.
