 I'm trying to figure out whether this ad means:
1. Smoking has some health benefits, but we don't care about that—we're just making it taste the best we can. Or:
2. They say smoking harms your health, we say hogwash, smoke and enjoy it.

Also, what does the tape measure have to do with it? :D

:?:
I think they're saying #2.

Also, maybe the tape measure is a metaphor for how much shorter your life will be if you follow the advice given on that page.

 Yes, it’s a good symbol of that, for sure.

And going back to the lead book, I’ve noticed that, oddly, there seemed to be a glorification of lead in general back then, I guess pushed by the lead producers. I watched (well, kind of scanned through) a film extolling the virtues of lead, and it seems I’ve seen some other things of that nature previously.

And if you looked at the Youtube vid showing the pages of the booklet, did you notice that the pencil was admitted to the party even though its “lead” was not lead—because the eraser did have lead. And think of all the kids gnawing on their erasers at school...

I looked at the pages, but I couldn't read it all because it went by so fast. I am going to go back so I can read it in full. That's pretty gross about the erasers. 🤢
I'm not sure if we addressed this one before, but I'll put it here again. 🙂

Whayda go, Alcoa, for insulting half of humanity!

Seriously, I wonder how women of that era viewed those ads. Did they take offense, or did they laugh along with them, or were they just mildly irritated and said, Oh well...

I think for the most part they didn't care, laughed along with them, or even just plain agreed. It's usually a relatively small group compared to the rest of the world to create an outcry and change in issues like that.
