What a strange thing to be advertised in a seemingly serious/educational magazine! You'd think to see that in a comic book or something!
Are there a lot of cheesy ads in those?

According to the inflation calculator, that's 23.80 in today's money. Doesn't seem low to me. And how are you getting to examine the tie for free if you have to give the postman $1.49 on receipt?

They are here and there, not a lot of them, and only in the '40's issues, for some reason. By the time you get up into the '50's and later, they are almost nonexistent. Not sure why that would be.

I got a kick out of looking at some of the adjectives used to describe it: amazing, spectacular, swank, smart, glorious, high-class, distinctive, magic, lovely... (Glorious??) One I'll agree with: it's distinctive, all right.

I found a page in which a person entails how his grandmother would take it. He said the active ingredient was bromide. I don’t know anything about that, though it sounds vaguely familiar. Supposedly it was effective, though it apparently could cause problems, as well.

That's an interesting observation. Most beauty advertisements do use fear tactics in one way or the other, often fear of rejection. In this one, they're using fear that sweat disintegrates clothing.
