Vermeer, Woman Writing a Letter with Her Maid.

In an old World Book Encyclopedia article I was reading: "There is always an air of quiet and timeless happiness in Vermeer's canvases. The light is clear and soft, and the outlines of all forms seem slightly blurred. His favorite colors, blue and yellow, make a lovely, cool harmony." (Italics mine) :D

Another example of Vermeer painting within a painting.

This one has some fascinating details vis-à-vis the way Vermeer handle light. Look at the detail of the headstock on the guitar, where he has used just a dot of white to suggest the reflections on the ends of the metal pegs.
