I don't remember ever not having something to do, but I had siblings that were close in age to hang out with, so it was hard to not find something to do.
I was thinking more in terms of just noticing things of interest in surroundings (which Penrod seems somewhat deficient at, unless it's something really flamboyant or exaggerated).

I've got this thing about personified trains. A few years ago, I bought and downloaded the entire Thomas the Tank Engine TV series.

Maybe Minnie Herman; or The Curse of Rum??
Ha! I haven't finished that one yet. There have been a few that stick out in my mind: Just Patty, Dawn O'Hara, and The Scarlet Coat to name a few. I also really loved A Daughter of Fife and Hans Brinker. The Children on the Top Floor was a joy to read, and The Five and a Half Club made me happy, too. I'm sure there are more, but those are just off the top of my head.
