Vintage Photos at Random
Re: Vintage Photos at Random
It's surprising how often people posed for photos with radios. I love this one from the 20's (no information other than it comes from the LOC collection).

Re: Vintage Photos at Random
Just imagine sitting next to this while listening to your favorite musical program sipping a hot cup of tea after work! Sounds like a great time to me!
I'm willing to bet this is the raw photo that might have been included in an advertisement or article about radios.
P. S. Did you notice that huge bundle of wires under the radio near her legs? Yikes!!!
And the wall decorations are pretty interesting. Let's see, I think I spot a horse, a deer, and a big flower.

Re: Vintage Photos at Random
This photo is captioned "Young ladies in a pillow fight, circa 1900". No information as to where, though I'd guess maybe a college dormitory. I'm trying to figure whether this is posed or just caught as a snapshot right in the middle of the action. The blurriness and partial exposure as on the left looks like the latter, but the girl holding the pillow in the left background looks posed. What do you think?

Re: Vintage Photos at Random
I think it's a real pillow fight. Here's a reddit post where I found the pic posted.

From the description:
Group of young ladies engage in a pillow fight. Love the death serious look of the one with the black pillow. Cumberland Valley State Normal School, Circa 1900.

I think you're right. Maybe the black pillow girl was just pausing an instant before resuming walloping. (She does look intent—could be bricks in the pillowcase.
Here is an 1887 photo showing President Grover Cleveland speaking to a crowd in Atlanta. It's amazing to think how much lung power it must have taken to be a politician back in that day (or an actor or singer in the days before PA systems).

Re: Vintage Photos at Random
This group is known as The Darling Saxophone Four, or sometimes the Four Harmony Maids. They were described as ““A quartet of talented and charming young ladies who appear in high class vaudeville and concert.” One source says the photo was taken in 1919, another in 1925. The impressive instrument on the left is the rare B-flat bass saxophone.

Re: Vintage Photos at Random
I'm inclined to believe it's 1919. Read this impressive in-depth article if you want more info (and more pictures!) https://temposenzatempo.blogspot.com/20 ... r.html?m=1

Re: Vintage Photos at Random
My goodness, what detailed information. Thanks!
Nice photos, but a lot of mysteries there that will probably never be solved. And yes, almost certainly '19 on the above photo.
Well, here's another group, the Schuster Sisters Saxophone Quartet, with sisters Adrienne, Genevieve, Imogene, and Chloris “Honeybird” Schuster. I wonder which one is Honeybird?

I think the second one looks like a Honeybird!

Re: Vintage Photos at Random
This is one of the photos from the last Rudy Vallee video I posted (I've had that catchy song stuck in my head for two days.
)
I couldn't find any info on it other than it was made in 1923—back in the day when a radio was a RADIO.
