This thread is for things that you learned today that you want to share. Have at it!

Well, today I found out that the six fingered man from The Princess Bride is also Nigel from This Is Spinal Tap. Mind Blown!

Here's another that is probably common sense to most.
Today I found out that the song Don't Go Breaking My Heart is by Elton John. How did I not know this???

That's a new one on me, too! I've heard that song for forever and never realized that was Elton John.

Me, too! Had no idea. Thought it was Donnie and Marie or something.

How much work is put into making gold leaf! I actually didn't know it was real gold that it was made out of. I was watching a travel show called Journeys In Japan, focusing on Kanazawa, Japan. In this show, what intrigued me was the way the gold ripples when it is blown on in order to be flattened.
I decided to Google more about it, and I watched this video.

That's fascinating, isn't it? I really admire that kind of traditional knowledge and craftsmanship. It's amazing that they can even handle that stuff when its hammered down that thin.

I knew something about gold leaf and gilding from an old book I have called The Artist's Handbook of Materials and Techniques by Ralph Mayer. In it, he tells about how the gold leaf is applied and how delicate it is. He states that if blown on too strongly will disintegrate into fragments! He did not really go too much into how it is manufactured, though, so this video was really interesting.

I found the video on their website of this episode! This is the one that prompted me to talk about gold leaf.
On Journeys In Japan, there is a different tour guide each episode. I think this one is so adorable! The gold leaf part starts around 18:40, but the entire episode is fascinating.
