I finally decided to pick another book off my shelf. This one's called Dawn O'Hara (1911) by Edna Ferber, and it's delightful so far. It's on Gutenberg if you're interested in reading along with me. https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1602
Anyway, I'm posting about it in this thread, because this paragraph gave me a giggle.

"She means that the ruined steak was further enhanced by mushrooms," I explained in response to Von Gerhard's bewildered look.

I wish my life was a non-stop Hollywood movie show
a fantasy world of celluloid villains and heroes
