Happy May Day!

Post by Kitty » Mon May 01, 2017 10:06 am

💮🌸💮💐Happy May Day, everyone! I will be posting May Day related things all day today. May Day is one of my favorite days, because it makes my mind wander; I think of all the fun festivities that have happened in the past on May 1st, and wish that my town had something like those celebrations. I hear they still go on in some places. :)

I hope your May Day is a very happy day, and if you have any stories to share from personal experience or stories you have heard, they can be shared right here in this thread.

You trying to tell me you didn't hear that shriek? That was something trying to get out of its premature grave, and I don't want to be here when it does. - Phantom of the Paradise (1974)

May Day 1939

Here is a British Pathe newsreel about the May Day festivities in Elstow, Bedfordshire, England. According to Wikipedia, it was the birthplace of John Bunyan, the Pilgrim who wrote The Pilgrim's Progress. Here is the Wikipedia entry, if interested.

Now on to the festivities! I wonder what the May Day Queen's name was?

Here is a cute video of people having fun in NC in 2015. They had to move the party date from May 1st to May 4th due to rain. They didn't give up, though, and it looks like that had a grand time!

This is the best version that I could find of this song. I think it's well sung by this artist. This is May Day Carol, which has many versions, and is a very old song.

Here are the lyrics. They are a little different in the song than in this link.

One wonderful tradition that some people have is making May Day baskets and leaving them on neighbor's doorsteps anonymously. These baskets can have goodies or just flowers in them. I love this beautiful idea.

I am scarcely aware of May Day, I'm afraid. But thanks for this nice collection—it's kind of gloomy and rainy here right now, so this is cheery to look at. :D

May Day festivals are a great way to celebrate spring/summer. Glad to bring a little cheer to the dreary day! :)

For the ending of the festivities, if I threw a May Day party, there would be a beautiful cake for light refreshment. It might look something like these.
