I love this one. It's a comedy/horror from Universal (with that wonderful globe opening, complete with the aeroplane circling around it) that never takes itself seriously.
Eccentric millionaire Cyrus West dies and orders his will be opened 20 years after his death at midnight. (What all his wealth was doing all those years is never said.) The last of the West family name, Annabelle, (played by Laura La Plante) is the lucky one to get his estate, under the stipulation that she be examined by a physician to make sure she is of sound mind. If she is not of sound mind, another envelope is to be opened stating the heir. She is given an envelope that she instructed to open only when she retires for the night.
When the alternate heir is about to be revealed privately to her, Crosby, the man to tell her, 'disappears' with the envelope containing the information. This is the first time we see the very badly manicured hand of the villain. Eek! At least clip your nails, dude.
The envelope that was given to Annabelle with instructions to read when she is retiring for the night tell of a button above the fireplace where the famed lost West diamonds are hidden. When she finds them, she weirdly puts them on and goes to bed with them on. BIG SURPRISE! They are stolen by Werewolf Hand. So much happens in this must see.
It's a spooky-haunted-house type movie that is always fun and has excellent camera work. The atmosphere is wonderful, and I just think this is a great movie for those who don't like silent movies. I also love the sepia tone of this one.
Oh, and Flora Finch plays money hungry Aunt Susan. The lady who plays the creepy housekeeper is very good, and I think she would have been a good female Lurch from the Addams Family.
Anyway.... Watch it... Love it... Share it.
