If a couple had a daughter, Bud Collyer would give them a doll to take home with them. This doll was called the Roxanne Doll. This doll was named after the model on the show. I'd love to have one of these!!

How about that? I really like Bud Collyer—he was a very fine person in real life, aside from being a good emcee. Unfortunately he died fairly young, of heart problems, I believe.

I wondered about how he was.... He definitely seems like a very caring person. He seemed to genuinely care that a couple won on that show... He got super into it. That stinks that he died young.

I know I'm re-quoting, but I was just curious. How did you know about him if you've never seen Beat the Clock? What else did he do? I want to know how you know he was a good person. I'd love to see other things he's done!

I'm mainly familiar with him from his hosting To Tell the Truth. He hosted it for many years in the 50's and 60's (a lot of them are on YouTube—if you're interested in watching some, find some of the ones with Polly Bergen on the panel—she was often pretty funny).

How I know he was a good person—I can't really remember the specifics, I just know I've read that he was very well-liked and was a dedicated Christian who really lived out his faith. I remember reading an article he'd written for Guidepost magazine somewhere, too. I don't now remember exactly what it was about, but I remember liking it.

Actually, a year or two ago, I bought a used copy of an inspirational book he wrote. When I got it, I saw it was written in verse, and somehow, it did not look quite as interesting as I thought it would be, and so, sorry to say, it was one of the ones I got rid of without ever having read it. If I had thought of it, I would have sent it to you.

Oh! I can record To Tell the Truth! That's on this channel, too! Thanks for the info. I've seen that show before, but I have gotten very familiar with him watching this, and I like him.

To Tell the Truth is great - one of my very favorites, both the ones with Collyer and with Garry Moore. I also liked the panelists Tom Poston, Orson Bean, Peggy Cass, and Kitty Carlisle.

I've been watching some Beat the Clock lately, and noticed that when the bell rings for the bonus challenge, the contestant often doesn't look excited at all. They always have a blank look on their face as if they don't understand.
I wonder if the details of the show weren't explained very well backstage? Or maybe this is just pure nerves.
