Favorite photos of silent stars
Re: Favorite photos of silent stars
I really don't remember. It was hanging around in the Silent Film Stuff folder on my computer, and has been there for awhile. It is a nice portrait, though. I liked him in The Ocean Waif (which has the best score ever, courtesy of Jon Mirsalis.)

Mabel with a walnut elephant at the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce.( I don't know the story behind this; I swiped it from Marilyn Slater's Mabel Facebook page.)

Re: Favorite photos of silent stars
This is a strange one. I wonder if this still exists.
You trying to tell me you didn't hear that shriek? That was something trying to get out of its premature grave, and I don't want to be here when it does. - Phantom of the Paradise (1974)
Re: Favorite photos of silent stars
I looked for information on that, but couldn't learn much. There is still one apparently in existence, but I think it's a modern reproduction. I can't imagine the original would have aged too well. It was apparently made in the 1890's as a display of California's agricultural bounty and walnut-growing prowess. (But why an elephant )
Here is another from Marilyn's FB page. I'm trying to figure out what Mabel is doing. Smoking?

idk!! That's weird! I thought maybe she was holding a bottle, but it's very hard to tell.
Thanks for trying to look up the statue. I'm not sure why it would be an elephant.... do elephants eat walnuts? I tried to Google but didn't come up with much.

That's a good one of Linder.

I have never heard of Gail Kane before today, but I stumbled upon this stunning picture of her while looking for something else. This came out of Motion Picture Studio Directory and Trade Annual (1917). She seems to be quite the character! According to Wikipedia, she collected scarab beetles and bathing suits.

I don't recall ever running across her before either, but that name seems awfully familiar, for some reason, and her face too, rather.

Pauline Starke and Director Edmund Goulding, 1926. Aside from the sepia, this looks like a modern photo, don't you think? I can't put my finger on exactly why.
