Favorite photos of silent stars

Wow, that's a nice one.

Another lovely picture of Alice Joyce from Motion Picture Story Magazine! What a hat!
I often wonder if the families know or care about their famous relative? If I knew that someone in my family tree was in film, I'd be elated!

You trying to tell me you didn't hear that shriek? That was something trying to get out of its premature grave, and I don't want to be here when it does. - Phantom of the Paradise (1974)
Re: Favorite photos of silent stars
Nice photo. That's an interesting question concerning the families. I think it many cases (at least this is impression I've gotten) is that it is not a big factor in their lives, and that they are often surprised anyone knows or remembers the existence of their once-famous family members.
Example: I've seen an interview with Richard Arlen, Jr., son of Richard Arlen and Jobyna Ralston, who were both pretty big stars in the 20's, and he was genuinely surprised that the interviewer knew who Jobyna was. He said something along the lines of "she was just mom to me; I didn't think of her as a movie star."
But there are a few who actively promote memories of the person (there is one I know of who actually overdoes it a little, IMHO, I'll not mention names). So I guess it varies.

Hmmm. I guess if you're not into the film history, it wouldn't be a big deal to them. Personally I think it would be very special to have a silent film person to be a family member! I'd probably be one who would overdo it, honestly.

Yes, I think it would be thrilling to have had a star of the silent screen in your family! But you know, so many silent stars were totally forgotten later in life, even some of the big ones who had been enormously popular. It's really odd. It doesn't seem it happened as much with the older stars of the sound era.

My goodness, I've never seen that one. Rather striking!
Re: Favorite photos of silent stars
The label says Gloria Swanson, Male and Female 1919.

Ah! I've seen Male and Female, but I don't remember that costume. She may have worn it in the film, or it may just have been something exotic gotten up for a still to publicize the picture. It was many years ago that I saw it, so I don't remember clearly.
Great film! Have you seen it? Fascinating plot. It is based on the play The Admirable Crichton by James Barrie (the author of Peter Pan, though that and this certainly have nothing in common.)
