Behind the Door (1919)
This film was just recently restored and released on Flicker Alley. Saw it last night. I don't want to give away spoilers for anyone who doesn't know the story (as I didn't), but man, it's pretty intense!

I read a little about it on Wikipedia—that does sound intense indeed!
