I'm surprised they would have used "their" to refer to a singular pronoun back then, though it's common today.

I am constantly surprised at the words they used to use.... For example, in these magazines, the girls will write in and say how "cute" specific actors were. It makes me wonder how early that usage was shown.

I suppose that they supposed that ladies supposed that birds and roses are supposed to be inoffensive!
