Fan Art of Silent Photoplay Actors

Post by Kitty »

This is a cool etching from March 1913 Motion Picture Story Magazine. Alice Joyce by A. B. Shults. I like it not only because it is beautiful, but because it is by a fan who sent their art in at Alice Joyce's peak of popularity.

You trying to tell me you didn't hear that shriek? That was something trying to get out of its premature grave, and I don't want to be here when it does. - Phantom of the Paradise (1974)

Wow, that is really excellent and beautiful work. I wonder if A.B. Shults wasn't a professional illustrator? If he wasn't he should have been. I like how the signature is worked into the bottom of the figure.

That's a good one. I wonder if Buster ever saw this. It would be nice to think he did.

I think it's new. I found this on Twitter, but lost the original user's handle.

Here's a beautiful one of Mary Fuller. I think these are fantastic. April 1913 Motion Picture Story.

A nice sketch of Ormi Hawley, from the May 1913 issue of Motion Picture Story.

It's amazing how he can suggest detail with just a few parallel lines—that's genius. Even the signature at the bottom is a thing of beauty.

Not quite fan art, but this is so strange I had to share! From June 1913 Motion Picture Story.
