Jo Stafford

Post by Kitty » Tue Feb 28, 2017 11:13 am

I came across the most beautiful voice I have ever heard a few weeks ago. That was the voice of Jo Stafford. The song was Allentown Jail, a haunting lament of a woman whose lover stole a diamond to give to her and got caught.

You trying to tell me you didn't hear that shriek? That was something trying to get out of its premature grave, and I don't want to be here when it does. - Phantom of the Paradise (1974)

A beautiful ballad, indeed. This is only folk material I've ever heard her sing.

I've loved her recording(s) of "You Belong to Me" for many years.

This is a kind of fun song called Make Love To Me sung by Jo Stafford.

Yes, that is a fun one. I've heard that before. I think it was probably a big hit of the day—it's certainly catchy. And one thing that interested me is that it blends a remnant of the big band sound of the 40's with the rock-n-roll sound of the late 50's, doesn't it? Which would make sense, since it was recorded in 1954.

It's got that boppy type thing going on with an old style voice. You said it!
