Actually, i did think it was going to go in a cynical direction. I'm sure it's because the tone of the repeating of "sweeter than wine" by the rest of the group sounds like something bad is going to happen in the next verse.

I've posted two or three Annette Hanshaw songs, but I don't think I've posted this one, one of her most charming. There has always been something about this song that transports me back into some idyllic, simpler time.

Since you liked the Major-General's song, I thought you might get a kick out of The Lord Chancellor's Nightmare Song from Iolanthe. This is being sung (as was the Major-General's) by John Reed, who was a much-loved singer with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Co. He did all the G&S comic baritone leads for many years. Text below. Anyway, I really liked it. It was very interesting, and very Danny Kaye-esque. The dream theme reminds me of this song: Sloop John B by the Beach Boys.

I'd forgotten posting that—glad you liked it. You're right, it is very Danny Kaye-ish; I thought of G&S when I was listening to some of his patter songs. It's too bad he didn't do any Gilbert & Sullivan—he'd have been a smash! That's the first time I've ever heard that Beach Boys song.

Yes. Hard not to like anything by the Beach Boys.

This is from The Dick Cavett Show, filmed the day after Woodstock ended. Stephen Stills playing 4 + 20. I used this one because not only is it very good, but you can watch people in the background enjoying the music as well as Joni Mitchell and some Jefferson Airplane members.

Yes, this seems familiar. It reminds me of the poem about the two dead boys shooting each other. I think I've posted that, too, at some point.
