Music and Sound Recording Before the 20s
Re: Music and Sound Recording Before the 20s
This cylinder is in good condition, has great sound for a 1912 recording. This is the same song that Jolson's character as a child sings in The Jazz Singer. I never knew the name of it.

I've loved that song for years, but I know it through the more whimsical Collins & Harlan version.Kitty wrote: ↑Wed Apr 19, 2017 3:05 pmAnother fun one. Billy Murray and the Heidelberg Quintet - Waiting for the Robert E. Lee (1912).

You trying to tell me you didn't hear that shriek? That was something trying to get out of its premature grave, and I don't want to be here when it does. - Phantom of the Paradise (1974)

That's quite interesting. I wonder how accurate of a re-creation of the pitches and rhythms this is. They must have some credible way of deciphering whatever system of notation they used.

I think it's pretty accurate, though I'm not sure how they know. There were even lyrics to the song, but it is not fully translated.
