What does Santa mean by: "Oh, can't any of you climb after him? If he reaches the top, we're lost." Do you get some sort of magical immunity once you reach the top of the pole?

Related to that, I wonder why the north pole is always pictured as a pole with a round knob at the top and red stripes going round.

Ah, man, how did that get past me? Well, when I was typing that question, I had a feeling that the answer was somewhere there staring me in the face. I guess that's why.

On the other question, someone on Reddit asked if there was really a candy-cane striped pole at the North Pole. Answer: Yes, it's right outside Santa's workshop.
